Frequently asked

Honest answers to the questions schools actually ask.

If your district legal team, IT director, or CTE specialist has a question that isn't answered here, send it to sales@blackboxintelgroup.com and we'll add it.

Classroom safety & legality

Is Blackbox CLC actually safe to run in a high-school classroom?
Yes. Every lab is defensive-only and runs inside controlled, fictional environments (Kali on a private VLAN, OWASP Juice Shop, sandboxed VMs). There is no live exploitation of real targets. The curriculum starts with a written Lab Safety & Acceptable Use Agreement that students and guardians sign before they touch a single tool.
Will my district's legal team have a problem with this?
We have not yet seen a district legal team object. The materials cite the CFAA, state computer-crimes statutes, FERPA, and the school's AUP directly. The framing is “professionals operate under written authority within a defined scope” — the same standard a paid penetration tester uses.
What about FERPA?
Blackbox CLC stores teacher accounts only. Student PII is never collected by the platform in v1. When student logins ship in v2, we'll provide a signed FERPA-compliant Data Processing Addendum and a school-data-only deployment option.

Technical requirements

Will this run on Chromebooks?
Chromebooks are fine for the AI Fluency course (browser-based tools, Ollama runs on the teacher's laptop for the local-LLM unit demo). Cyber I/II labs that require VirtualBox/Kali need a Windows or macOS lab machine, or a Chromebook with Linux dev mode and adequate RAM. Specific lab requirements are listed on each module's detail page.
Do I need a real cyber range / cloud lab to teach this?
No. The curriculum was designed to run on free, locally installed tools (VirtualBox, Kali, Wireshark, Burp Suite Community, OWASP Juice Shop, Ollama, LM Studio). If your school already has a paid range like Virginia Cyber Range or NetLab, the modules pair well with it — but they do not require it.
Will my school's content filter block the labs?
Most won't. The labs that touch the open internet are limited to documentation reads and OSINT against fictional companies. If your filter blocks Kali ISO downloads or Ollama model pulls, we provide a one-page IT memo you can send your network admin to whitelist the specific endpoints.

Licensing & access

If I leave my school, do I keep the materials?
Single-teacher editions (Starter, Semester, AI Fluency, Complete Pathway) are licensed to you. You keep your account and your downloaded materials when you change schools. School and district licenses are tied to the institution.
Can I edit the materials for my classroom or LMS?
Yes. Slide decks export as editable .pptx, worksheets are modifiable PDFs (and can be exported to .docx on request), and the School Customizer lets you stamp your school's logo, colors, and policy language onto the safety agreement, syllabus, and certificate. Quizzes can be uploaded to Canvas, Schoology, Google Classroom, or Blackboard.
What happens to school licenses at year-end?
School licenses auto-renew yearly unless cancelled. All teachers on the license keep access through the end of their paid term. We send a renewal reminder 60 days before the term ends and a final notice at 30 days.
Do you offer purchase orders or district contracts?
Yes. School and district licenses can be paid via PO or invoice through QuickBooks Online under Blackbox Intelligence Group LLC. Use the District License contact form and we'll send a quote and contract template.
Refund policy?
Single-teacher editions are refundable for any reason within 14 days of purchase, full amount, no questions. Email support@blackboxintelgroup.com. School and district licenses are governed by the signed agreement.

Curriculum scope

How much instructional time does the full pathway require?
Cyber I is 10 units totaling about 2,400 minutes (40 instructional hours, fits a 90-day semester comfortably). Cyber II is 15 units totaling about 4,800 minutes (a full second semester or year-long block). AI Fluency is 10 units / 1,800 minutes (a standalone semester or a 6-week intensive). Pacing guides ship for both 6/9-week and full-semester schedules.
Does this prep students for any industry credentials?
Yes. Cyber I Unit 10 is the EC-Council Ethical Hacking Essentials (EHE) review unit. Cyber II builds toward CompTIA Security+ objectives and the Cyber I + II combination prepares students for entry-level analyst roles. AI Fluency is alignment-only; emerging industry AI literacy assessments are still stabilizing.
Do you have an alignment letter for my state CTE framework?
We provide signed alignment letters for state CTE frameworks (Virginia, Florida, Texas, Maryland, others on request). Use the contact form, tell us your state and the specific framework, and we'll send a tailored mapping within 5 business days.
Are quizzes editable / can I import them into my LMS?
Quizzes ship as printable PDFs and as Common Cartridge / QTI exports for Canvas, Schoology, and Blackboard. Google Classroom exports ship as a Google Form clone. All quiz items are also available as raw markdown so you can edit freely.
